Often, your desktop publishing design is going to require specific fonts to communicate your message and your style. The font or fonts that you choose can express volumes when it comes to the complete layout and design of your desktop publishing project.
There are plenty of resources available for buying, downloading, and designing fonts, usually of the TrueType variety. Depending on what you require, whether it's a title font or a body font, you should be able to find the appropriate style and design that you need, through some simple searches.
While there are many copyrighted fonts that you can purchase, some at a premium, there are many others that are shareware, freeware, or might come packaged with various desktop publishing software, saving you some money on your desktop project.
Never underestimate your message with the wrong designs, colours, graphics, or even fonts. Even the smallest details can make a difference in your overall look, and the font plays a big part, even if it doesn't require a whole lot of thought in your desktop publishing plans. Remember not to use too many fonts in a layout (usually no more than three). Often a strong font will come with different varieties (bold, italic, condensed, etc.) that can assist you in some of your desktop formatting.
In addition, remember that your font selection should be eye-catching, but also remain readable. Grunge, fancy, and other crazy fonts might work in a title graphic or a masthead, but stick to the basics when it comes to text, as the reader can be easily turned off by wacky looking fonts that are difficult to read. |
